Hi Ladies,
How are you? Reading this blog post may be the first time in a long time you have truthfully answered this question. So please take the time to listen to your body; your thoughts; and your emotions on how you feel in this very moment. As women, many of us play many roles in the lives of those we love. It is not uncommon for us to spend so much time making sure everyone around us is ok, that we have nothing left for ourselves. Have you ever felt like something was off with your body, but you ignored it? Have you ever noticed yourself crying more than usual or not having the desire to do the things you love? If you answered yes to any of these questions, now is the time to seize the opportunity to make changes to your wellness routine and listen to your body.
The body is designed to alert us when it is not functioning correctly. Unfortunately, early symptoms are often faint and are usually ignored. When we feel off balance, it is easy to tell ourselves to push through, or we will deal with our symptoms another day. Well, I’m here to tell you that not listening to your body or ignoring your symptoms can have short term and long-term health consequences.
What if I told you that ignoring abnormal symptoms in some cases can be the difference between life and death? I’m not here to discourage you or instill fear. I am here to encourage you to become more in tune with yourself so that you will be able to recognize any changes in your health. Below, I have listed five signs and symptoms that should never be ignored.
Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding:
Abnormal vaginal bleeding can be a symptom of cervical and endometrial cancer. One should never ignore irregular or abnormal bleeding. Women who have experienced menopause (12 months of absent menses), should always be seen for further evaluation if they experience a single drop of blood after menopause. Heavy, light, or irregular vaginal bleeding can be related to polyps, fibroids, or hormonal imbalance. When you experience abnormal bleeding, I recommend asking for a transvaginal ultrasound in addition to routine labs and pelvic exam.
Abdominal Pain/Bowel Changes:
Most of us have had occasional constipation or diarrhea. However, when you experience abdominal pain accompanied by fever, bloody stools, or nausea, immediate evaluation is needed. A change in bowel habits; bloating; feelings of fullness; can all be early signs of colon cancer, IBS, or gluten intolerance. Keep a food diary along with a diary of your symptoms to discuss with your healthcare provider.
Breast Changes:
When completing a breast exam, be sure to feel for lumps; changes along the nipple line; breast pain; nipple discharge; or changes in the texture of your breast. If changes are noted, a mammogram and breast ultrasound is recommended.
Abnormal Vaginal Discharge:
Changes in vaginal discharge are not always an abnormal occurrence. However, vaginal discharge that has an odor, associated with discomfort, or discolored warrants further evaluation and attention. Abnormal vaginal discharge can be a result of infection or sexual transmitted infections. Some vaginal infections if left untreated can result in infertility.
Fatigue:
Occasional fatigue is very common and most of the time can be treated with lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and rest. However, chronic fatigue can be a result serious health issue that needs further evaluation. Fatigue can be caused by anemia, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious illnesses.
As you continue in your wellness journey, I encourage you to take the time to learn your body’s rhythm. You are responsible for your health. No one knows your body better than you. Advocate for yourself. Never ignore what your body is trying to tell you and always Make Wellness your best accessory!
Your Sister in Wellness,
Lauren
